The stitches and the details in this design are replicated from mid 17th Century crewel work in Glamis Castle, Scotland. This ancient crewel work has been re- purposed to upholster a day bed and can now be seen by visitors to the castle.
The attitude when stitching this design should be playfulness, and, as with the original, there is no need for perfection. The 17th Century original was probably embroidered by a family member or members.
